Key Issues We Address
Am Kenyan focuses on the critical challenges facing our society today
Human Rights
Upholding of human rights is found in Chapter 4 of the 2010 Constitution - The Bill of rights which consists of; The Right to Life, The Right to Equality and Freedom from Discrimination, The Right to Freedom and Security of the Person, The Prohibitation of Slavery, Servitude and Forced Labour and The Freedom of Conscience, Religion, Belief and Opinion. In Kenya, human rights have been violated by institutions that need to protect and serve the people leaving citizens with no choice than to avoid addressing the issues they face.
Social Justice
The impunity in Kenya is catalyzed by those who have and can get their way through situations that would otherwise need accountability and transparency. Education, healthcare, employment, gender equality, reproductive rights, and voting are all areas that are affected by social justice that leads to unfair treatment and unequal opportunities for all. A vast majority of Kenyans try to lead a normal life but the obstacles faced because of economic inequality makes them face class struggles.
Corruption
One of the major reasons that makes Kenya not move from being a third world country is corruption. Corruption is rampant and as it is in 2021 the country faces one of the most corrupt regimes in its history. Getting the economy to recover from debt will take years yet the money stolen according to the President is 2 billion per day. When Kenya frees itself from corruption, the country will make milestones in its growth.
Security
It is hard for Kenyans to feel safe when the perpetrators of their killings are those meant to protect and serve them. Extrajudicial killings by Kenya police are on the rise and if an intervention or solution is not found many young people will lose their lives to reasons unknown to neither them nor their families.
Politics
In Kenya, the period before, during and post-elections has in the past seen political temperatures rise and with it, spates of violence, considerable gagging of freedom of expression and curtailing of dissenting voices. Instances of politicians both verbally and physically abusing each other and instigating violence are likely not to be covered on mainstream media, therefore eliminating crucial evidence. Sexual harassment against women is also rife during the Pre-election period especially as political parties conduct their nominations as well as during campaigns.
